The Networks - General Introduction

Networks at a Glance

I would like to use this picture to explain how the networks we are going discuss exists. The visiable portion is the internet. The deep portion is the Deep web (just like deep blue sea). The smaller portions inside the deep web are the dark nets.

Getting a Little Deeper
As I explained in the picture above, the deep web contains around 500 times of the internet. From a purist’s definition standpoint, the Surface Web is anything that a search engine can find while the Deep Web is anything that a search engine can’t find. There are a number of reasons that a search engine can’t find data on the web, today we plan on covering the most common one. As I checked out the deep web for the first, I was surprised to see the search result's difference. ie, the search results from google on Internet is different from Deep Web. We actually deal with filtered information by the agencies, governments and search engine firms (may be) in Internet. The access to information on Deep Web is huge. To a serious note -  I saw many websites where an anonymous user can order couple of grams of Cocaine just like amazon.com.

Other examples of Deep Web content can be found almost anytime you navigate away from Google and do a search directly in a website – government databases and libraries contain huge amounts of Deep Web data. Here’s a few other examples:

  •     Findlaw – all about law and court cases.
  •     Northern Light – Competitive intelligence, business analysis, product development, and technology research.
  •     Intellus – Good Source for Background checks
  •     Xrefer  — Fee based database of 236 titles and over 2.9 million entries.
  •     LexisNexis — Billed as the world’s largest collection of public records, unpublished opinions, legal, news, and business information. Over 35,000 individual online sources. I’ve not been able to justify subscribing, so I don’t know.
  •     Get Abstracts — Large online library of more than 8,000 business book summaries. It is the most efficient way to get the best business titles.
  •     Forrester Research — An independent technology and market research company, publishing in-depth research reports on a variety of subjects.
  •     Factiva — Online collection of about 10,000 individual sources.
  •     US Search – Background checks and location service

Most of the content located in the Deep Web exists in these websites that require a search and is not illicit and scary like the media portrays. However, if you go a little deeper in the Internet you’ll find the Dark Web.

Moving a Little Darker
Dark Web or Dark Net is a subset of the Deep Web where there are sites that sell drugs, hacking software, counterfeit money and more. These networks are notorious for terrorism activities, bitcoin money transfer, credit card frauds and many cyber crimes. By definition, The Dark Web then is classified as a small portion of the Deep Web that has been intentionally hidden and is inaccessible through standard web browsers. This
can be accessed only with specific software, configurations, or authorization, often using non-standard communications protocols and ports.

Who Uses this Dark-nets
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the onion network architecture of the dark net was originally developed by the military—the US Navy to be precise. Military, government, and law enforcement organizations are still among the main users of the hidden Internet. This is because ordinary internet browsing can reveal your location, and even if the content of your communications is well-encrypted, people can still easily see who is talking to whom and potentially where they are located. For soldiers and agents in the field, politicians conducting secret negotiations, and in many other circumstances, this presents an unacceptable security risk.

The darknet is also popular among journalists and political bloggers, especially those living in countries where censorship and political imprisonment are commonplace. Online anonymity allows these people, as well as whistle blowers and information leakers, to communicate with sources and publish information freely without fear of retribution.
